In observing a ship sailing past the horizon, the mast of a ship can be seen to sink below the horizon after the rest of the ship, proving the Earth’s spherical nature.
The idea of the round globe became the norm with each passing generation with many performing simple tests to confirm it. Eratosthenes performed the first calculation of Earth’s circumference in the 3rd century BC by measuring the lengths of shadows at noon in different geographical locations in Egypt. Aristotle came to this conclusion by observing the constellations at different parts of the world. Things began to change in Greece in the 6th century BC with Pythagoras, Parmenides and later Aristotle who all believed the Earth was round.
